My handbuilt sculptures are mostly done using the coil method. I make very large, think coils of clay flattened by pounding with the side of my hand. I attach the first coil very firmly to a bottom shape I have chosen. With this done I begin to stretch the coil much as one would pinch a pot, making it ever wider and thinner. After stretching it about to half its thickness I allow the piece to set and dry for awhile. The clay is too soft to add the next coil without causing it to collapse. When it is stiffer I add the next coil and proceed as before, repeating this until I get the size piece I am after. Then I stretch more and more all the while shaping the clay to fit the concept of the piece I am building. Most of the ones you see here were made using two coils. I close the top by adding small slabs to shape the openings. Great attention is given to the final texture and shape of the piece. Each is distinct in shape and color. Any would add a dynamic presence to your home.
